This course is asynchronous - you will have access to the included modules and can learn at your own pace with the flexibility to complete modules on your own time. American Deaf Culture I is an 8-week course that teaches an introduction to the Deaf culture present in America, the foundation of Deaf culture, and various aspect of Deaf culture through a vigorous curriculum designed for those who would like to gain a basic understanding of Deaf culture. This is the ideal course for a student who is looking to expand their cultural knowledge through the study of Deaf culture. This course does not include any ASL language instruction; the entire focus is on American Deaf Culture. This course covers the following topics: - The foundation of American Deaf Culture - Famous Deaf people & those who have greatly impacted the culture and community - Introduction to Audism and Hearing Privilege - Culturally appropriate behaviors - and more! Please use this link to register: https://forms.gle/iZWyKV7QNfryQyq16 This course will have recordings, readings, and various assignments (written, receptive sign comprehension, and expressive sign performance) to engage students in learning about Deaf culture. This course is not intended to prepare individuals for the interpreting field nor is the program goal to provide degrees or transcripts for courses. Students who complete this course will receive a certificate of completion should they successfully meet the requirements of the course and are encouraged to seek out performance evaluations if they intend to continue their ASL/culture studies formally.
